The project can host up to two students. The work involves building an optical sensor based on flexible polymer substrate such as: flexible nanostructured optical sensor (GMR) as well as plastic optical fiber. The sensing is based on the change of the refractive index of the polymer due to the presence of the organic compounds causes change in optical resonance or attenuation. The students are expected to gain (1) good understanding about optical sensing (2)using 3D printing (3) optical lab skills (4) characterizations and (5) Signal processing and data analysis.

The project can host one student. The project focuses on building a readout system centered around multispectrum color sensor that interprets changes in the surrounding (organic volatile compounds for example) in terms of the amplitude of the different channels included in the sensor. The student is expected to gain (1) 3D printing experience for housing and mounting (2) The use of IoT for data collection and signal processing. (3) Data analysis
